Being indecisive, we just hopped in the car and hit the road.

We stopped by a house of caffeinated beverages aka Starbucks and drove off toward the sunset. The End. just kidding...

We decided to drive up the 126 toward Filmore -which I know isn't the world's most exciting place, but it was something new. However, on the way we saw a sign saying "Lake Piru 6 miles" so Daniel and I veered off the main road to follow a broken road full of pot holes and windy S turns and WABAMM! Lake Piru was HUGE! I had no idea there was a lake of this size so close to us!

Honestly it wasn't the prettiest of sceneries, but it was a breath of fresh air to see a large expanse of water even if it was man-made! :)

Living in Los Angeles, we aren't that far away from the ocean in the grand scheme of things, but when you grow up a hop, skip and a jump away from the Atlantic Ocean, when you can smell the salt in the air and wake up in the morning to see seagulls flying above your house, the ocean is far enough away to give me water withdrawals. So, Lake Piru, it's no ocean, but it's water and I was happy to spend a few moments enjoying it.

I took a few pictures and then we got back in the car to drive the rest of the expanse of the lake. At the end of the road we found ourselves next to Smokey the Bear and a Camp Site, we pulled a U turn. Once we turned around we both looked out of the drivers side window and what did we see?

A DEER! What a surprise! It stood still staring at us for just a minute or so, just enough time for me to get a shot of my camera!!

After that we drove back down the broken and windy road back to our apartment and got home at the perfect time to start cooking dinner. It was a lovely mini adventure....
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/SiQsKVsBjQI/AAAAAAAAAE0/T9dg1DbBwgA/s320/IMG_3616.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342443614100360450" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/SiQsdw_0hoI/AAAAAAAAAE8/CIB8RAe2OXQ/s320/IMG_3621.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342443947848664706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/SiQstbXAjyI/AAAAAAAAAFE/risgrgsHYiY/s320/IMG_3622.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342444216918249250" />

Back from Paradise

Back from Paradise...

Daniel and I just got back from a week in Paradise a.k.a. Hawaii. We could have never gone if it weren't for Daniel's parent's amazing generosity and love! What an unforgettable invitation they presented to us, we, of course, RSVPed right away!! So thank you to Bert and Carol for such an AWESOME blessing!!

We had a wonderful time basking in the Hawaiian sun rays, laying out by the pool, reading a good book or two all the while experiencing some of God's most magnificent creativity. The ocean view of our hotel room balcony was breathtaking. The Pacific what a site to see, not to mention the palm trees, white sand beaches, lush green grass, beautiful tropical flowers, and roaring waterfalls... it truly is amazing. Creation should always put people in a state of astonishment and complete awe. Just look around! Seriously, stop and smell the flowers.

Daniel and I took a road trip around the island, just site-seeing and taking photos...ya know touristy stuff. However, we had no idea we were in for such a treat! As we were driving along the coastline road we 'randomly' stopped and pulled over to take pictures of this particularly beautiful beach, but once we got down to the sand we saw a crowd gathering near the shoreline. We wandered over to check out what was going on and what did we see? SEA TURTLES! It was so cool! There were about 8 of them swimming near the shore! What an special treat!

The next day we set out to go hiking at the Maunawili Trails which leads to the Maunawili Falls! Nature is so beautiful and what a necessary experience to escape from the human element and surround ourselves with a natural setting- to hear the birds sing and the leaves crunch under our feet, to listen to the river tumble over boulders, to be shaded by gigantic trees, to watch sparkling water slide over rocky cliffs diving into a calm placid pool... Time well spent.

The rest of our week in Hawaii we spent lounging, sounds a bit disappointing, but it was greatly needed. Daniel has just finished his first year at Graduate School so, it was good for him to relax and slow down from going 100MPH with a heavy work load and finals. it also gave us an enormous amount of time to "just be" with each other and not worry about the daily, fast-paced routine of life. We enjoyed our time together relaxing by the pool and at the beach listening to the waves crash, watching the sunset and eating delicious food, and letting the sand go between the toes...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/ShSAuQM9x6I/AAAAAAAAAEE/6vItiBpD-Gg/s320/IMG_3350.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338032990452565922" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/ShSA_DwwPXI/AAAAAAAAAEM/qLMT9IzaV58/s320/IMG_3383.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338033279170788722" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/ShSBQd_dBlI/AAAAAAAAAEU/lFYvb0Zizmc/s320/IMG_3397.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338033578269541970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/ShSBhC3nN4I/AAAAAAAAAEc/mYRYjy_vNIk/s320/IMG_3400.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338033863046674306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/ShSB6WPWoRI/AAAAAAAAAEk/vM0kvSq4dPI/s320/IMG_3576.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338034297743253778" />

pic.#1-google search. all other pics from this post-my personal photos<IMG SRC="http://banners.copyscape.com/images/cs-gy-88x31.gif" ALT="Page copy protected against web site content infringement by Copyscape" TITLE="Do not copy content from the page. Friday night was a tribute to the famous talented Ray Charles. The band was outstanding!!! We had a blast! For the next few weeks they'll be hosting Duke Ellington tunes, songs of Billie Holiday, and the wonderful sound of Miles Davis... classic. I think Daniel and I found a new spot! However, it wasn't the usual service. Iain Murray ( from Lancashire, England. Founder of the Banner of Truth Trust) was guest speaking. He was here for the celebration of John MacArthur Jr's 40 years of ministry at Grace Comm. Church. Iain Murray preached on Colossians 1:26-27. The theme was the mystery of Christ revealed to the nations and to each individual's heart. Christ in You! Good stuff. Very honoring to the Lord.
And today's music was exceptional! Beautiful choir voices, and gorgeous classical music.

After church, we grabbed sandwiches and headed over to Griffith Park. We ate our lunch in the warm sunshine, listened to African drum beats in the distance, watched the children play tag and play ball. What a beautiful day. It felt good to kick off our shoes and feel nature's carpet of clovers in between our toes. We made plans to do the same next Sunday. I'm looking forward to laying down on a blanket, resting my eyes, letting the sun blush my face, sipping on chilled lemonade, watching the clouds drift by, and being in the arms of the love of my life, my husband. ( and maybe a little frisbee too) Summer in February, what a world, what a world.... ( haha, I don't know where that came from, sounds kinda like Yoda... well, a little bit. Humor me.)

So, where to start!? It has been too long...

Just a quick update to get the ball rolling again.

Daniel and I are now back in LA from various adventures over Winter Break. Daniel's second semester started on Tuesday and he's hittin' the books hard. He's taking 4 1/2 classes. Old Testament Studies, Beginning Hebrew II, Pastoral Counceling, Discipleship Lab, and a Prayer Class. Lots on his plate. Let the sleep deprivation begin!!!

I am currently looking for a job, anywhere at this point!!

Daniel's not the only one who is reading like a maniac. I'm a bookworm myself, by choice. Just finished a quick book called, A Grief Observed by none other than the brilliant C.S. Lewis himself. It is a collection of his personal journals he wrote through grieving his deceased wife. It's about the process of sorrow, his inner most thoughts and struggles- his personal found truth of faith and pure emotions. I enjoyed it, even though the tone of the book is grey, I found it to be refreshingly honest and full of pure motives of the heart.

Next on my list is a book called, When People are Big and God is Small by Edward T. Welch. It has come highly recommended from sources I highly respect. I find that I am bracing myself for the first dose since I know it will rip my human pride to shreds. It's medicine I am in great need for.

Next on the list after 'the medicine' I plan on reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It's a Christian based novel. I have only heard great things about this book. Can't wait to dive in.

The list goes on and on and on and on. I'll update the reading list when I see fit.

Still can't believe it's 2009. Wow.
Here we gooooooooooooooooooooo!
What's in store, what stories are we to tell, what obstacles to overcome, what tears to soak up, what will Spring bring, what new people will we meet? so many unanswered questions. People who are disabled or have birth deformities/defects are thrown out of their families, cast out of the village communities and pretty much left to die. They are despised and looked down upon. A team including Daniel's parents are going out and giving wheelchairs to those who need them and sharing the good news of Jesus- the gospel- real hope and love. I'm so excited to hear what God is doing over there.

here is a video of wheelchair distribution in Uganda. It shows the same type of chairs that the Ethiopia team will give out.

I'm bummed I couldn't find the e3 partners mission video of a previous wheel chair mission trip. I was asked to design a 'fall themed' centerpiece for a Salad Supper Event for the wives of the seminarian husbands.

So, Fall decor = traditional, pumpkins, harvest, colorful leaves etc etc...

Don't get me wrong, I love all that stuff, our apartment has a Autumn vibe for sure.

It's just, well, I love modern/contemporary design and creating something original. So, my centerpiece is a little outside the box- even a little abstract I'd say.

With a few friends of mine the other day, we went to Griffith Park to go 'Branch-Hunting' HA HA, we were quite successful! We gathered up a bunch of the most mangled looking branches we could find, stuffed our trunk, and drove home for the next step!..... Spraypaint!

I have found that if you gather pretty much any kind of tree branch and spray paint it white... INSTANT BIRCH! haha, It's a great little cheat if you don't live where birch trees grow AKA the desert!!

After I was done drowning the branches in white- I took orange spray paint and sprayed only half of each branch. After all the branches were dry I stuck them in a tall cylinder vase. I had already spray painted the pine cones gold that I placed at the bottom of the vase.

All done! I think it's pretty cool. It's definitely not your typical traditional fall decor, but it was fun creating something new!
Once we get to the event tomorrow, I will place orange runners in a "X' over a linen tablecloth. (it's a square table.)

I think I am going to do something similar for Christmas time for our place, but just leave the branches white like birch and fill the bottom of the vase with moss, natural pine cones, and little pine branches. I can't wait!!

I heart decorating.

Stomach Flu

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BGUEt3aBV3Q/SRovovFtcsI/AAAAAAAAACE/NDtYaVNx2Rs/s320/Photo+69.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267575091044905666" />
So, I am sitting here with the stomach flu! But, I wanted to take a quick minute and praise God for my wife! Though I'm sick, groggy, and achy...she hasn't left my side all afternoon! I can't imagine if I were still living with a house full of guys! There would probably be a few old pizza boxes housing stale slices, loudness, INSANITY for the sick guy, and with all do respect: grossness. Instead I have a beautiful wife, a soft voice to keep me company, a gentle touch, and a servants heart to cherish me! I am amazed at the grace and providence of God for Vanessa! I vividly remember the night I got down on my knees to ask God for a wife. At the same time, I had an intense hope that Vanessa would start coming over to hang out because she hadn't come over for a while (we always had people over). Then, God brought her to my neighborhood! She moved just a couple of blocks down the road! I had already had my eye on her for a while, but this time I fell for her as fast as the flick of a switch! I am so blessed! So, I want all the world to know how much I love my wife so I am starting with our blog viewers.

Peach, the word is out because we know the drive through guy at the Temecula Jack in the Box knows...hehe!! Did I just drop a "hehe?" that doesn't seem very manly. That goes to show that Vanessa even brings the "hehe's" out of me. AND I LOVE IT!!!! I lOVE MY BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Can't wait till you come home with the movies!

Posted by Daniel

An Early Thanksgiving

"So once in every year we throng
Upon a day apart,
To praise the Lord with feast and song
In thankfulness of heart."
~Arthur Guiterman, The First Thanksgiving

Saturday- Thanksgiving Day came early this year. Daniel and I celebrated with the family this past weekend.
( Bert and Carol-Daniel's parents- will be in Ethiopia over real Thanksgiving)

What a great time for friends and family and kiddos to gather together and reflect upon the past year's blessings. There's no better way to connect with those closest to you than over amazingly delicious food. What a fantastic tradition, a day of old and kept freedoms, and exchanged words of love and thankfulness around the table time and time again.... it never gets old... it's my favorite holiday!

Daniel's parents have a tradtion at the table. Once everyone has their food piled high on their plates, someone starts... they say what they are thankful for, this goes around the whole table, it's really cool to hear everyone's thoughts and praises to God for His many blessings in their lives.

I wish I could fly to Massachusetts to celebrate Thanksgiving with my side of the family. I miss them so much. This is the off year, Christmas is here in San Diego as well. :(
Well, my heart's there- thats for sure. MISS YOU MOM!

It was a joyous time- eating, laughing, music, embarrassing family movies, and who could forget the intense hand ball competition- kids VS Uncle Daniel.... the kiddos whooped Uncle Daniel's butt! hahaha, that was fun to watch!!

Sunday- We went to our old church Grace Church. It was so so so good to see friends- to catch up. We love that church so much and miss everyone there!

Out to lunch after with friends Jason and Allegra- love you guys!

Daniel and I are going back down to San Diego the week of Thanksgiving to stay at his parents house, Allegra and I are planning on cooking up a turkey! woohoo! This should be very interesting because I'm a virgin thanksgiving cook! AHHHHHHHHH, it's pretty much my nightmare... 10 dishes all coming out hott plus a 20lb bird!

Ok ok, someday it will be like that- this year, it's just 4 of us! And well, we took a vote, if everyone has their mashed potatos everyone will be happy! After dinner we went over to Treasure Island to find the end of the line waiting impatiently to find seats for Cirque du Soliel! What a show!!! If you haven't heard of this show, google it. It's crazy! The stunts these people do, you can't believe your eyes!!!! The visual, auditory elements really create an out-of-this- world atmosphere that can't be described by using merely words. You have to experience it for yourself!!!

The show ended- we went upstairs to play a few slot machines just for kicks! haha, we weren't expecting any wins, but we at least walked away with $4.10, we didn't have before! haha. slot machines, I don't understand them, I don't understand how people can become addicted to them... are they really addicted to losing money? I mean, if you have a desire to gamble at least play against the human element, like poker or blackjack, not SLOTS! The bottom line is though, gambling is a scheme of selfish casino presidents and personnel- to take advantage of peoples weakness with the biggest temptation ever, money, getting cash fast! It breaks my heart really.

Hit the pillow around 3AM- wake up- check out- hit the road around 3 and waved good bye to the craziest city in the US.

check!

crossed out on our list of 'Must Dos!'

It was fun....

On to the next adventure.... :)

love

If they can see you love them, you can say anything to them. I still have to do my reading! However, I thought I would sneak in a little blog entry first!

Daniel's Dad just left our place from visiting for a 1/2 a night and a 1/2 a day. He went with Daniel to check out the Old Testament class at the Seminary. Quite the interesting class, but also quite the LONG class. 7:30- 11:30. That's a long one especially when you have to wake up at 5:30!

Been there, done that.

Last Saturday- I threw the Pumpkin Patch Party! It was BYOP (ahem, bring your own pumpkin) good times. I served up a hot pot of Chili for all- with all the makings. Friends brought cornbread and pumpkin bread!! Spiced Apple Cider filled the room with cinnamon, clove, orange, and apple. Drop cloths were dropped on our living room floor... we all gathered around, scooped out the orange goop insides and seeds! Then slowly our pumpkins began to emerge into full blown created personalities. Heart shaped eyes with big puckered lips, a dinosaur, an angel, a goofy face, Kung-Fu panda, a maple leaf, and an owl!

It was good to get back into those childhood traditions. October came alive to me again... especially now living in a place where Autumn never comes. I took on the task of creating it in our little one bedroom apartment. I was satisfied. Now if only there was a crispness in the air, goosebumps running up the spine from a chilly gust of air, smoke found in the distance from a neighbor burning the fallen leaves, chimneys puff puff puffing away, golden-bronze, and ruby leaves dancing on the wind when looking out the window that has been fogged up by a warm breath. I miss Autumn.

A Man Named Ray

Slept in late. It's Saturday. Spent the day cleaning, cleaning, and oh yea CLEANING! Now usually I enjoy cleaning just because the end result is extremely self- satisfying. The feeling summed up in the outward expression of, "Ahhhhhhh" is totally worth it in my eyes. Yes, call me crazy, but there is nothing better than looking at a perfectly made bed and a vacuumed floor to put me at ease. Although, today no matter how nice the APT looked I was not satisfied, I was frustrated all day. weird. As I was hustling and bustling about with my cleaning bucket... the Hub was flying through Hebrew flashcards muttering under his breath words that sound like he had a furball in his throat. So, same ol' same ol' you could say for our new Los Angeles routine. However, tonight was quite the 'out of the ordinary" night on the town...

Daniel and I drove out to Pasadena to walk around Colorado Street. There were people everywhere, it was like a mini NYC. We found a stylish little Italian joint to split a pizza. The table set up in this restaurant was quite cozy. You could hear every single word exchanged at the table right next to you. We had a very interesting couple sitting beside us. The women was rambling on and on about how there's no way of knowing the difference between 'right' and 'wrong' and how she is seeking to find her own place to experience true peace and joy. She was tip toeing about on her surface level arguments, beating around every bush that displayed a real foundation. Pretty much logic was completely absent from her thinking process. It was nonsense. Absolute nonsense. Now, as much as Daniel and I wanted to jump right in this conversation, we didn't want to be rude so at the end of the delicious pizza I left a card with the website, interruptthesilence.com on it. If she wants to find true peace and true joy hopefully she will check out THE BIBLE!

Anyway, we went on our way down the street, searching out the next nearest Starbucks, and of course it wasn't far or hard to find! :)

So, equipped with coffee and hot chocolate in hand ... off to the ladies room it was for me.

While I was waiting in the line to use the restroom ( And may I add, THERE"S ALWAYS A LINE FOR THE WOMEN'S BATHROOM! ALWAYS! ugh) Daniel was waiting ever so patiently and well, randomly started up a conversation with this guy named Ray.

Ray announced that he wished he had a million dollars and a huge house. Daniel came back with the response of "Have you ever wished for salvation?"

And there was an instant connection. God was at work.

Ray has been on the streets for 15 years. What a story he had up his sleeve! Daniel shared the gospel with him, and well, ( at this point I have showed up on the scene :) ) we were both surprised that he was actually pretty familiar with some Scripture! He understood that Jesus died for his sins. Praise the Lord! We ended up talking to him for about 45 minutes, bought him some soda pop, and invited him to church!! Now, challenge number one: HOW DO YOU FIND A HOMELESS MAN NAMED RAY IN LA? Challenge overcome! Get this, Ray had a CELLPHONE! What are the odds. It's one of those pre paid phones that he saves up cash for buying minutes. We exchanged numbers and he's planning on calling us, but we have his number so we plan on getting in touch. I'm so excited that God chose to use us in this way to glorify Him! Please pray for Ray's salvation. I'm excited to see God at work in this man's life. Pray Pray Pray! Especially pray that we are able to touch base with him again. I'm excited!

In conclusion, all day I was completely unsatisfied with my work, but in contrast tonight was all satisfying, satisfied that we have an all powerful God who is in complete control working through his children to call his lost sheep in this dark world. God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him. God showed me that I will never find complete joy and satisfaction in this world even in the small things like a clean apartment, but instead I will find complete utter satisfaction, complete joy, and infinite peace in Christ alone.

"For consider your calling brothers; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, " Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." We have been here for about 2 months now and well, routine has kicked in. Daniel goes to school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. He works full days on Monday and Friday, and some how manages to squeeze in all of his homework. I am now involved with the Seminary Wives Fellowship on Wednesday night, which has been such a treat. It's been fun meeting the Professors wives and meeting great godly girls from all over the world! Also, there has been an amazing transparency in all the women, which was incredibly refreshing to see. I can't wait for tomorrow night because I'm in charge of decorating the refreshment table. I love making things pretty:)

Speaking of getting involved- not even 2 weeks had Daniel and I been up here that he got an email invitation asking if I wanted to join in the New Gospel Choir!!! Of course I jumped right in. We had 4 rehearsals total and then we were put in the spotlight at the Fall Women's Event which Joni Eareckson Tada spoke at!!! What an amazing event that was and what an exciting experience to be on stage with 70 other believers praising God through such fun Gospel music. I found such joy in singing to Him in that moment!!!

When we find time to hang out with each other we have lately been in Explore Mode. Since there are a billion freeways that criss-cross through LA we just pick one and see where it takes us. A few weeks ago we took the 118 West and we got all the way to Ventura! We found ourselves in Malibu another time. We checked out Burbank, the village district is cute and fun. Explored Hollywood BLVD and Sunset BLVD and found a coffee shop that is to die for. Amazing food and the best lattes ever!!!!!! Oh and Santa Monica is tons of fun!!!

L.A. is a hard city is many aspects. Just from observing it seems tough, closed off, difficult. L.A. has the highest amount of homeless people out of all main cities in the U.S. The last post was about 73,000 people. It's the vainest of cities I have seen. Inappropriate billboards plaster the cities buildings and freeways. Idols of alcohol, sex, and drugs are contantly in your path when walking down the street. It's sick. One night Daniel and I walked down Hollywood BLVD to look at the Chinese theater and the hand prints in the cement. We hung out for about an hour or so, when we got back to the car and were starting to drive home we both said how we felt dirty, like we had just walked through a thick dust cloud of sin. Hollywood is drowning in sin- so much so that mentally we felt sick/dirty because of the amount of sin that is thriving there. I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across, but the bottomline is there needs to be a light placed in that darkness. Daniel and I want to get a group of people together to street witness down there. Hollywood is a black hole for the spiritually lost. I want to be part of God's work.. I want to be available for Him to use my hand to pull these people out of Satan's eternal black sinful hole. And to then show them Christ and let His light shine in their hearts!

God is good.
